The Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology was established in 1996 and has since been actively engaged in education and research under the Faculty of Pharmacy. The department offers the compulsory courses ECF219 Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Immunology and ECF239 Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Immunology Laboratory in the first semester, and the compulsory course ECF304 Medical Microbiology and the elective course ECF534 Current Topics in Pharmaceutical Microbiology in the second semester.
In the first semester, students receive instruction on the structural features of bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic cells; host–microorganism interactions; mechanisms of pathogenesis; antibiotics and their modes of action. In the second semester, they study microorganisms of medical importance.
The department also offers a Master’s Program with Thesis in Pharmaceutical Microbiology. This graduate program aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in scientific research methodologies. With a focus on current literature and advanced techniques in microbiology, the program is designed to equip candidates with the capacity to conduct education and research at an international level.
Research Areas:
• Total viable count (bacteria/fungi)
• Determination of antimicrobial activity
• Sterility testing
• Host–microorganism interactions
• Microbiome modulation strategies
• In vivo modeling in microbiome research
• Clinical microbiome studies
• Identification and enumeration of probiotic microorganisms
• Postbiotic studies
• Characterization of probiotic properties of candidate strains
