Faculty of Pharmacy
Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry - General Introduction

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is the first stop on the long journey a molecule must take to become a drug. Pharmaceutical chemists who work on the design, synthesis, and qualitative and quantitative analyses of new drug molecules aim to establish reliable structure–activity relationships for these molecules so that they can advance toward preclinical studies, working in close collaboration with various disciplines. Although the majority of research in Pharmaceutical Chemistry consists of organic synthesis studies, topics such as molecular modeling and computer-aided drug design, investigations of drug mechanisms and structure–activity relationships, drug metabolism, and drug analyses using qualitative and quantitative analytical methods form the foundation of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Consequently, the Pharmaceutical Chemistry education offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels covers these topics.
