Established in 1993, the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology has played a pioneering role in initiating undergraduate and graduate education in the field of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Faculties of Pharmacy in our country.
The scientific field of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology encompasses the biotechnologies, advanced technologies and tools, research and development, education and training, and knowledge management required throughout the life cycle of biological/biotechnological drugs and their combination products — including their production, quality assurance, risk-based licensing, clinical research, and therapeutic applications. Grounded in the fundamentals of pharmaceutical science and pharmacy practice, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is one of the fastest-developing areas within biotechnology; through the innovative drugs and products it brings to therapy, it contributes to human health and society, generates high added value for national economies, and requires multidisciplinary knowledge and experience.
Undergraduate, master's, and doctoral level theoretical and practical education is conducted in Turkish by the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, covering the properties, production technologies, quality assurance (good manufacturing practices, quality control, and quality risk management), risk-based licensing, distribution and follow-up processes, clinical research, therapeutic applications, national and international legal regulations, and ethical and bioethical principles of biotechnological/biological medicinal products — including recombinant DNA technology-derived protein-based drugs, monoclonal antibodies, biosimilar drugs, vaccines, immunopharmaceuticals, immunotherapeutics, stem cell-based drugs, and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) (somatic cell therapy medicinal products, gene therapy medicinal products, tissue-engineered products, and combined ATMPs) — as well as their biotechnological/biological drug–medical device and biotechnological/biological drug–drug combination products, among others.
The research and cell culture laboratory infrastructure and facilities of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology include horizontal and vertical electrophoresis systems for protein and gene analyses, a microplate fluorescence spectrophotometer, a nanodrop spectrophotometer, centrifuge and biosafety ultracentrifuge systems, bacterial and mammalian cell culture facilities (shaking incubators, a carbon dioxide incubator, a laminar flow safety cabinet, water baths and cooling systems, an inverted phase-contrast/fluorescence microscope with digital imaging system, conventional and HTS electrode-system volt-ohmmeters), a gel imaging device, a liposome extrusion device, a high-speed stirrer, a nanosizer particle size analyzer, a polarizing inverted phase-contrast microscope, and other small laboratory instruments. Other equipment required for research is provided through the central research laboratory facilities affiliated with our university and faculty, as well as through collaboration with other departments.
