Department of Clinical Pharmacy - General Overview

General Introduction to the Department of Clinical Pharmacy

The proposal by the Hacettepe University Rectorate to establish a Department of Clinical Pharmacy within the Department of Pharmaceutical Professional Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmacy was examined at the Council of Higher Education Executive Board meeting dated 12.06.2013, and, taking into account the opinion of the Presidency of the Interuniversity Board, was approved under Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880. Following this, Turkey's first Department of Clinical Pharmacy was established at Hacettepe University Faculty of Pharmacy under the Department of Pharmaceutical Professional Sciences, and the appointments of Assoc. Prof. Dr. S. Kutay Demirkan, Dr. Pharm. Aygin Bayraktar, and Lecturer Dr. Pharm. Ayçe Çeliker to this department were approved by the Rectorate. As of 23 September 2013, Assoc. Prof. Dr. S. Kutay Demirkan was appointed by the Dean's Office as Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy.

As of the Fall Semester of the 2014-2015 Academic Year, education began in the Clinical Pharmacy Thesis/Non-Thesis Master's and Doctoral Program, established under the Graduate School of Health Sciences.

Following the Pharmacy Specialization Examination (EUS) — the first centralized examination of its kind, administered by ÖSYM in 2017 — Clinical Pharmacy Specialization Training began within the Department of Clinical Pharmacy.

Since its founding (2013-2025), the Department of Clinical Pharmacy has graduated 12 doctoral students, 20 master's students, and 12 clinical pharmacy specialization students.

Clinical pharmacy is an information service provided by an intensively trained pharmacist to physicians, nurses, other healthcare personnel, and patients, with the aim of resolving problems related to patients' medications. The goal of clinical pharmacy practices is to improve the patient's "quality of life" and "treatment outcomes." The pharmacy services provided for this purpose should be directed toward both "inpatients" and "outpatients."

Clinical pharmacy is a health science field encompassing patient care, provided by the pharmacist with the aim of arranging the patient's drug therapy in the most appropriate manner and ensuring the protection of health, recovery, and prevention of disease. The clinical pharmacist routinely evaluates drug therapy and makes recommendations to the patient and healthcare personnel. Clinical pharmacists are a scientifically sound source of knowledge and consultation for the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of medications (American College of Clinical Pharmacy).

Clinical pharmacy encompasses all services provided by the pharmacist regarding medications prescribed and used in hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, home care services, and other settings, ensuring the rational and appropriate use of medical products and devices by the clinical pharmacist. The word "clinical" refers to activities carried out in relation to the patient's health (European Society of Clinical Pharmacy).

The Department of Clinical Pharmacy carries out its activities with the aim of: enabling the delivery of the Clinical Pharmacy–Pharmaceutical Care undergraduate courses and related internships (hospital and community pharmacy) included in the Pharmacy Education Standardization and Core Curriculum Program; ensuring the transition of the education provided toward "patient-centered" training that meets post-graduation needs; training well-equipped clinical pharmacists specialized in the relevant field to serve as part of teams in various units within hospitals; enabling community pharmacists to provide patient-centered pharmacy services and ensuring the continuity of the in-service training programs they request to develop themselves in this field; enabling the pharmacy profession to gain a new vision and become better equipped to operate in a manner integrated into practice; and supporting the wider adoption, in pharmacy practice, of applications that safeguard public health and increase treatment adherence among patients.
