Course Content: Introduction to general chemistry, Atoms and the atomic theory, Chemical compounds, Stoichiometry, Chemical reactions, Reactions in aqueous solutions, Gases, Thermochemistry, Electrons in atoms, the periodic table and some atomic properties, Chemical bonding, Liquids, solids, and intermolecular forces, Solutions and their physical properties, Chemical kinetics, Chemical equilibrium, Acids, bases and acid - base equilibrium, Entropy and free energy

Course Objective: The aim of this course is to provide pharmacy student with a background in important concepts and principles of chemistry.

Course Content: Introduction to organic chemistry, Basic concepts of organic chemistry, Chemical reaction, Classification of organic compounds according to their functional groups, Reagents and basic reaction types, Reaction mechanism, Alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, Aromaticity and aromatic compounds, Stereochemistry, Nomenclature, synthesis and chemical properties of organic compounds

Course Objective: The aim of this course is to enable the students gain knowledge and skill on basic topics of organic chemistry, structural properties, synthesis and basic reactions of organic compounds.

Course Content: Alkyl halides, Substitution and elimination reactions, Alcohols, phenols and thiols, Ethers, thioethers and epoxides, The properties of the carbonyl group and carbonyl group compounds, Aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, Amines, Heterocyclic compounds, Nomenclature of organic compounds, Synthesis and chemical properties of organic compounds

Course Objective: It is aimed to enable the students gain knowledge and skill on basic topics of organic chemistry, structural properties, synthesis and basic reactions of organic compounds.

 

Course Code and Course Name: ECF 260 Organic Synthesis

Course Type and Credit: Elective, 2-0-2, (ECTS Credit:3)

Course Content: Basic organic synthetic methods for the synthesis of pharmaceutically important compounds, Structure-based strategies in the production of a target molecule, Transform-based strategies (functional group conversion) in the production of a target molecule, Stereochemical strategies in synthesis, Planning the synthesis of a target molecule, Total synthesis, Retrosynthetic analysis and strategies, Various examples of synthesis.

Course Objective: The aim of the course is to learn how to use the knowledge on basic organic chemistry for a targeted molecule of pharmaceutical interest..

Course Type and Credit: Elective, 2-0-2, (ECTS Credit:3)

Course Content: Basic concepts of polymer science (classification, molecular weight, glass transition temperature, melting point etc.), Polymerization mechanisms, Polymerization processes, Thermal and mechanical properties of polymers used in medical and pharmaceutical fields of study

Course Objective: The aim of the course is planned on the bases of fundamental knowledge on polymer science and properties of polymers used in medical and pharmaceutical fields of study.

 

Course Code and Course Name: ECF 551 Organic Reaction Mechanisms

Course Type and Credit: Elective, 2-0-2, (ECTS Credit:3)

Course Content: Molecular structure and chemical reactivity, Basic reaction types and mechanisms in organic chemistry, Ionic and radicalic reaction mechanisms, Reaction mechanisms in terms of structure and reactivity, Nucleophilic addition, elimination and substitution reaction mechanisms, Electrophilic addition and electrophilic substitution reaction mechanisms, Carbocation reaction mechanisms, Stereochemical aspects of reaction mechanisms

Course Objective: The overall goal of this course is to learn and apply the reaction mechanisms producing the basic principles which determines chemical reactivity in organic chemistry.

 

Course and Course Name: ECF 553 Introduction to Medical Materials

Course Type and Credit: Elective, 2-0-2, (ECTS Credit:3)

Course Content: Biocompatibility, properties and promotion of materials (biological based materials, polymers, ceramics, metals and composite) used in medical devices which are in close contact with biological tissues and fluids. Materials used in hard and soft tissue regeneration, tissue engineering and medical devices (artificial organs and implants).

Course Objective: The aim of the course is to provide an introductory overview of materials which are used in medical devices (artificial organs and implants) and are in close contact with biological systems.
